Open calls: deciding where to apply
Applying everywhere can consume the time you need to make work. Start with the full rules and decide whether the opportunity fits. Conditions change between editions; never assume last year’s requirements still apply.
Check eligibility
Review age, residence, discipline, format and any restrictions. Record the deadline, time zone and submission channel. Distinguish registration from physical delivery and results. Ask the organiser to clarify ambiguous conditions and keep the response.
Check artistic fit
A production grant, a prize for finished work and a research residency support different needs. Match your proposal to the stated criteria. Look at earlier editions to understand the programme, without copying selected projects.
Estimate the work involved
List missing documents and tasks: photographs, translations, packing, transport, travel or production where relevant. Check who covers each cost. Read exhibition, insurance, return and image-use conditions. Request clarification before accepting obligations you do not understand.
Track applications
Record the organiser, official rules URL, edition, deadline, eligibility, fit, missing documents, expected costs and status. Add the date you last checked. Set an internal deadline before the official closing time and keep the exact submitted version and any receipt.
Start with official sources
The Blog directory links to Injuve, Spain’s Ministry of Culture and Matadero Madrid. These are research starting points, not a list of currently open applications. Always check the edition, status and full rules. Also explore regional and local cultural organisations.
Learn after the result
Use published feedback when available. Without it, do not invent reasons for rejection. Improve what you can control: clarity, fit and documentation. Keep reusable work for your next application.
